Eating Mindfully May Reduce Dementia Risk

A new study suggests that adopting the MIND diet may help reduce the risk of dementia, particularly in older adults. The MIND diet combines elements of the Mediterranean and DASH diets with a focus on brain-boosting foods such as leafy greens, berries, nuts, and olive oil.

Researchers analyzed data from over 93,000 U.S. adults and found that those who followed the MIND diet had a lower risk of dementia, with a 9% reduction in risk for those who started following the diet at baseline. The benefits were consistent across different ages and racial groups, suggesting it may be never too late to make changes.

The study also found that people who improved their adherence to the MIND diet over time experienced the greatest drop in dementia risk. This trend was seen among all racial groups, with African Americans, Latinos, and Whites experiencing the most significant reductions.

While the results are promising, researchers note that more studies are needed to confirm cause-and-effect relationships. The study’s lead author, associate professor Song-Yi Park, suggests that a tailored approach may be necessary when evaluating different subpopulations’ diet quality.
