A recent study suggests that the dietary habits developed in one’s 40s, 50s, and 60s can significantly impact overall health by age 70. Specifically, a diet rich in plant-based foods and low in ultra-processed foods has been linked to healthy aging.
Researchers found that individuals who consumed more whole, plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, and legumes were less likely to develop chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Conversely, those who relied heavily on ultra-processed foods, which are often high in added sugars, salt, and unhealthy fats, were at a higher risk for these conditions.
The study’s findings emphasize the importance of adopting healthy dietary habits during midlife to set oneself up for optimal health in old age. By making informed food choices, individuals can reduce their risk of chronic disease and maintain their physical and cognitive function well into their 70s.
