Eating Yoghurt Daily May Cut Risk of Bowel Cancer

A recent study found that consuming yoghurt daily can reduce the risk of lethal bowel cancer by modifying the gut microbiome. Professor Justin Stebbing, a consultant oncologist, says this is because yoghurt contains live cultures of beneficial bacteria that maintain a healthy balance in the gut.

The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in overall health and is thought to be essential for preventing inflammation, which can contribute to cancer development. Research analyzed data from over 150,000 participants and found that those who ate two or more servings of yoghurt per week had a lower risk of developing certain types of colorectal cancer.

While yoghurt did not directly lower the risk for all types of bowel cancer, the study suggests that long-term yoghurt consumption may alter the gut microbiome in ways that protect against certain cancers. This is in line with nutritional scientist Professor Tim Spector’s daily yoghurt habit, which he says helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome and aids digestion.

The good news for those looking to reduce their risk of bowel cancer is that eating yoghurt daily may be as simple as having one thing for breakfast each day. Regular yoghurt consumption has also been associated with lower blood pressure and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, making it a valuable addition to a healthy lifestyle.
