EchoStar Prepares Bankruptcy Filing Amid FCC Review

Satellite TV provider EchoStar is considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing as it battles the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over its wireless spectrum licenses. The company faces revocation of these licenses due to non-compliance with federal obligations to provide 5G service in the US.

EchoStar’s inability to make strategic decisions has been severely impacted by FCC actions, particularly regarding its Boost Mobile business. The company had previously disclosed that it missed $500 million in interest payments due to uncertainty over the ongoing FCC review.

Last year, U.S. satellite TV provider DirecTV terminated its agreement to acquire EchoStar’s satellite television business after a failed debt-exchange offer.
