The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is under fire for threatening to revoke EchoStar’s spectrum licenses due to non-compliance with its 5G buildout requirements. This move could have severe consequences, including harming national security and consumer choice.
EchoStar is a leading technological company in areas relevant to competition with China and national priorities in trade and advanced manufacturing. As the only US carrier offering 100% 5G Stand-Alone networks, EchoStar’s Boost brand has built a unique network that includes an OpenRAN-based system, which excludes Chinese suppliers accused of threatening national security.
The FCC’s actions threaten not only EchoStar but also every holder of a spectrum license, as revocations can have severe consequences for wireless businesses. The company had committed to build its 5G network as part of the US Government’s commitment to four national networks when T-Mobile acquired Sprint in 2020.
However, China has been rapidly expanding its 5G capabilities, with over 16,000 private networks and a significant lead in public safety and security features. The US needs to catch up, but current deployments risk falling short without significant investments in innovation and capital.
The FCC’s actions could have devastating consequences for the US market and international competitiveness. Reversing course is essential to prevent China from gaining an unfair advantage.
