The UN Environment Program analyzed the environmental impact of menstrual products and found that menstrual cups are the most eco-friendly option. They’re made from silicone and can be used for up to ten years if properly cared for, saving energy and resources over time.
Menstrual cups are also free from chemicals like bleach and additives, which means less waste in landfills and litter on beaches. Reusable pads and period underwear are other viable options, but experts emphasize proper washing techniques to maintain environmental benefits.
PFAS, or forever chemicals, have been found in some reusable products, including menstrual underwear. To avoid these chemicals, the menstrual cup remains a top choice. However, single-use products still have an environmental impact due to production processes and material sourcing.
Wastewater treatment experts advise against flushing single-use products down the toilet, as they can clog pipes and cause environmental harm. Researchers found that tampons score better in some categories while pads lead in others when it comes to environmental impact. Opting for reusable applicators paired with loose tampons is a simple swap that can make a difference.
