“Eddington” Earns Standing Ovation at Cannes Premiere

The latest film from Ari Aster, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, received a 5-minute standing ovation at its Cannes Film Festival premiere on Friday. The Western drama, set in May 2020, follows a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor that sparks tension among the townspeople.

Aster was visibly humbled by the response, saying he felt “privileged” to be at the festival and thanking the audience for having him. This marks Aster’s first time attending Cannes as a director, after skipping the festival circuit with his previous films, including “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” and “Beau Is Afraid.”

“Eddington” is set to have a theatrical release on July 18 and follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, which also starred Phoenix. The film’s cast includes Austin Butler and Pedro Pascal, and it has received generally positive reviews from critics despite its box office failure in 2023.

A24’s A-list director returns with a new Western drama, following his previous critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful films. With the Cannes premiere under its belt, “Eddington” is poised to make an impact at the box office this summer.
