Egg Prices Expected to Rise Through 2025

Egg prices have increased by 8.2% in November, and experts predict that these higher costs will persist through 2025. The main contributor is the ongoing Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as “bird flu,” which has disrupted egg supply since 2023.

According to Kevin Bergquist, Sector Manager at Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute, seasonal price increases during the holidays and bird flu have elevated egg prices. Prices over the past year have remained above 2023 levels, often exceeding those of 2022 when HPAI first affected the market.

Wholesale egg prices jumped nearly 55% in November, but consumer prices may not reflect this increase. Bergquist notes that retailers use staple items like eggs to adjust overall pricing, sometimes taking negative margins to avoid upsetting consumers.

Before the large bird flu outbreak in March 2022, flock numbers supported lower egg prices. However, the outbreak and subsequent re-emergence of HPAI have hindered market supply, resulting in record prices in December 2022. Producers are still struggling to rebuild their flocks due to ongoing outbreaks, contributing to under-supplied egg markets and sustained high prices.
