Egg Prices Plummet Amid Bird Flu Outbreak Decline

Egg prices in the US have dropped by over 40% since late February, offering consumers welcome relief at grocery stores. The decline is largely attributed to a decrease in significant bird flu outbreaks, possibly due to seasonal patterns in virus transmission.

Typically quiet in February, North American flyways are now gearing up for spring migration. As wild birds resume their journeys, the risk of renewed outbreaks increases, potentially straining domestic poultry populations once again. US authorities have been working to curb the spread of infection through measures such as culling infected farms.

Since 2022, approximately 166 million egg-laying hens have been culled due to bird flu. Once infected, the virus spreads rapidly and is often fatal, prompting culls to prevent further transmission and minimize harm to neighboring farms.
