Egg Prices Soar Amid Bird Flu Outbreak Nationwide

A bird flu outbreak is causing a surge in egg prices, with cartons becoming increasingly scarce on store shelves. The US Department of Agriculture reports over 150 million poultry birds have been killed since 2022 to combat the H5N1 strain, leading to shortages and price hikes.

The number of affected birds has risen significantly, with 23 million infected in January alone. To contain the virus, farmers are de-populating flocks, which can delay egg production and drive up prices. Food economist David Ortega explains that rebuilding a flock takes time, and there’s a biological constraint to immediate production.

While some restaurants have imposed surcharges on eggs, experts don’t believe the US is experiencing a nationwide shortage. However, stockouts are reported in certain regions. The rise in egg prices has led to theft, with 100,000 eggs stolen from a trailer in Pennsylvania worth about $40,000.

As cases continue to increase, Ortega predicts price hikes will persist until the bird flu impact decreases. A sustained period of no major commercial operation impacts would signal stabilization and potential price decreases. Meanwhile, human cases of bird flu have emerged, with 67 confirmed across the US as of Wednesday, mostly among farm workers.
