A surge in egg prices has left many Americans scrambling to buy necessities like eggs, just days before new tariffs on imported goods take effect. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that egg prices increased 8.4% between November and December due to a nationwide shortage caused by the avian flu outbreak.
The crisis is more complex as the Trump administration announces a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, while a 10% tariff on China products will also come into effect soon. Experts warn that tariffs could drive up prices for other imported goods like fruits, vegetables, beef, and maple syrup.
Despite efforts to buy eggs in bulk, many consumers are finding themselves stuck in long lines at stores like Costco, where customers are reportedly buying two dozen eggs for over $7. In some locations, the price is double that amount. Some buyers are even reselling eggs on Facebook Marketplace at a markup, highlighting the desperation of those unable to get their hands on affordable eggs.
However, experts assure consumers that while avian flu has infected nearly 23 million chickens across the US, there is no known link between bird flu and human illness through food contact. To be safe, it’s recommended to check for pasteurization labels and thoroughly cook your eggs.
