The avian flu virus is causing a shortage of fresh eggs in US grocery stores, leading retailers such as Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, and Costco to limit egg purchases.
Due to the ongoing issues with the supply of eggs, Trader Joe’s has implemented a limit of one dozen eggs per customer, per day, across all its stores. The company hopes this will ensure that customers who need eggs can purchase them when they visit.
Over 150 million poultry birds have been killed in an attempt to combat the virus, known as H5N1, which is causing egg prices to soar and supply to be limited.
Other retailers have also implemented similar limits on fresh eggs, with Sprouts limiting purchases to four dozen eggs per visit. At Costco, customers are facing a maximum order quantity of five for online orders due to the shortage.
The shortage has led to frustration among shoppers, who are taking to social media to share images and videos of empty refrigerator sections. Some have even gone as far as stretching from outside through the warehouse to get to the fresh dairy and eggs section.
As the situation continues to unfold, it’s essential for customers to be aware of the limits in place at their local grocery stores.
