US President Donald Trump has allegedly backed down from his plan to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza, with Egyptian officials crediting Jordan’s King Abdullah II as the key to convincing him.
According to an Egyptian official speaking on condition of anonymity, Trump has agreed to support Egypt’s post-war plan for the enclave, which aims to govern Gaza through a police force made up of Palestinian Authority (PA) policemen who remained in Gaza after 2007.
The plan does not include Hamas or the PA as envisioned by some other Palestinian factions. Instead, it relies on Gulf states having a role in reconstruction investments to ensure security control inside Gaza.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is set to discuss the plan with Saudi Arabia this week. Diplomats and analysts have been left wondering if Trump genuinely wants to take over Gaza or was threatening a takeover to extract concessions from Arab states.
A senior UN, European Union, and World Bank assessment released Tuesday estimates that rebuilding Gaza and the occupied West Bank will require at least $50bn, with $20bn needed in the first three years.
