Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki has admitted that the game’s focus on three-player co-op gameplay led to a neglect of dedicated duo play. However, Ishizaki confirms that FromSoftware is considering post-launch support for duos, despite initially overlooking this aspect during development.
Nightreign is designed as a PvE gauntlet for teams of three, with soft balancing to accommodate solo players. While the game encourages matchmaking and allows players to team up with one other friend, the duo experience was largely overlooked. Ishizaki apologized for this oversight, stating that he and his team prioritized creating a multiplayer co-op game for three players.
Despite this, Ishizaki acknowledges that some players may want to play solo, citing his own preference for playing alone as an example. He explained that the self-revive feature in Nightreign provides a limited life raft for solo players, allowing them to revive themselves without losing progress.
In terms of gameplay, Ishizaki noted that enemy AI is adjusted to make solo play more manageable, but warned that the same strategy won’t always work in the game. This suggests that duos and solo play will require different approaches.
While no specific post-launch updates have been confirmed for Nightreign, player feedback could potentially inspire additional granular updates aimed at improving duo gameplay experiences. For now, players can expect new content from the DLC, including new characters, bosses, and map biomes, which may also help to address some of the duos-related issues.
