Researchers at Washington State University have found that drinking elderberry juice daily can improve metabolic health and boost the gut microbiome. A recent clinical trial published in the journal Nutrients showed that consuming 12 ounces of elderberry juice daily for a week led to significant changes in the body’s ability to process sugars, reduce insulin levels, and burn fat.
The study involved 18 overweight adults who consumed either elderberry juice or a placebo with similar coloring and taste. The results showed that participants who received the elderberry juice had increased amounts of beneficial gut bacteria, including firmicutes and actinobacteria, and decreased amounts of harmful bacteria, such as bacteroidetes.
Elderberry contains high concentrations of anthocyanins, plant-based bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and antimicrobial effects. The researchers believe that these compounds are responsible for the positive effects of elderberry juice on metabolic health.
This study contributes to a growing body of evidence that elderberry has numerous benefits for human health, including weight management and gut health. With further studies planned to explore other applications of elderberry juice, this research holds promise for those looking to improve their overall well-being.
The researchers have filed for a provisional patent for using the bioactive components of American black elderberry for weight management and gut health through supplements or other applications. The study was supported by a $200,000 grant from the US Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
