Jesse’s radio report of the Wolves’ attack at the marina prompted him to change course, but Ellie decided to track down Abby instead, following clues from Nora about their connection.
At the aquarium, Ellie found Abby’s friends, Owen and Mel, who were heavily pregnant. Despite being met with hostility, Mel convinced Ellie to help her deliver an emergency C-section. However, just as they were preparing to leave the war zone, Abby arrived, killing Tommy and subduing Jesse. She then pointed a gun at Ellie, leaving her fate uncertain.
Creator Craig Mazin explained that the show’s new approach is inspired by traditional cliffhangers in storytelling, aiming to empathize with characters like Abby. However, the drastic change in gameplay from the original game sparked controversy among fans, including death threats against actress Laura Bailey. In contrast, reactions to Joel’s death were more positive, with fans showing understanding and emotional response.
The showrunners acknowledge that it will be impossible to complete the Last of Us narrative within three seasons, suggesting a potential fourth season to conclude the story.
