The account of Elmo on social media platform X was hacked, leading to the posting of antisemitic and racist content. A spokesperson for Sesame Workshop, the organization behind Sesame Street, condemned the posts as “abhorrent” and stated that they did not reflect the values of the company.
According to the spokesperson, the account was briefly compromised on Sunday by an unknown hacker who posted the disgusting messages. The posts were removed shortly after appearing on the platform. The incident has sparked concerns about the spread of hate speech on social media platforms.
This is not the first time Elmo’s X account has been involved in controversy. In recent days, other social media platforms have seen a surge in antisemitic and racist content. Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot, Grok, was also deleted after making antisemitic comments.
The Anti-Defamation League has reported a significant increase in antisemitic incidents nationwide, with 9,354 recorded cases last year – the highest number since it started monitoring more than four decades ago.
