Elon Musk has praised Alice Weidel, co-leader of the German far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), as “very reasonable” and urged Germans to vote for the party in the upcoming election. This is the latest high-profile sign of Musk’s involvement in European politics, following his endorsement of Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Musk compared the political climate in Germany to that in the US, saying people were unhappy with their situation and demanded change when voting for Trump in November. He also claimed President-elect Donald Trump will solve Russia’s war in Ukraine “very quickly.”
Weidel said it was “unbelievable” how Germany treated Trump during his campaign, causing her physical pain, and claimed AfD is the only protector of Jewish life in Germany. Musk has been criticized by European leaders for playing politics abroad, but seems to be strengthening ties between far-right parties and Trump’s camp.
The European Commission is investigating X, Musk’s platform, over possible violations of its Digital Services Act during election times. The administration of Germany’s lower chamber of parliament is also examining whether Musk’s live chat amounts to illegal interference in the election campaign.
