Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company has delivered its first fully autonomous car from a factory to a customer’s home across town, including highways. If true, this milestone is significant and could be considered more impressive than Tesla’s “Robotaxi” service with human supervisors.
Musk claimed that the car was driven without any people in it or remote operators controlling it at any point. This would be a first for fully autonomous driving on public highways. However, several companies, including Waymo, have already tested and offered self-driving services with no human presence in the vehicle.
Tesla’s Robotaxi service involves a Tesla employee in the passenger seat ready to hit a kill switch. Musk argued that his claim was valid, but this is not accurate as other companies have done similar autonomous driving without human supervision.
The milestone comes after Tesla has been testing its vehicles autonomously from factories to delivery lots for several months. The company’s previous Robotaxi launch fell short of expectations due to issues with in-car supervisors and numerous problems arising in the first few days of operations.
While an autonomous drive with no one in the car can be impressive, there are potential caveats. The question remains: what’s different about Tesla’s approach that would make it reliable enough to remove supervision?
