Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is planning to step down from the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) by late May, citing progress in reducing the deficit. This comes as his electric vehicle company, Tesla, faces mounting protests, stock declines, and legal challenges.
Musk’s role at DOGE is temporary and limited to 130 days within any 365-day period. He spearheaded a spending reduction program that brought federal expenditures down to around $6 trillion. According to Musk, his team has been slashing waste and fraud at an average rate of $4 billion a day, saving US taxpayers $115 billion as of March 24.
However, Musk’s efforts have sparked protests and legal challenges across the United States. He defended DOGE’s budget cuts, saying they were necessary to eliminate inefficiencies in federal agencies. Despite criticism, Musk remains confident that America’s financial outlook is improving and that critical services will not be jeopardized.
The announcement comes as Tesla faces a turbulent period, with nationwide protests, stock declines, and reports of vandalism targeting company facilities. Musk admitted feeling overwhelmed, stating he has “17 jobs” and expressed concern about media coverage of the attacks on his company.
