Elon Musk Outlines Self-Driving Plans Amid Q2 Disappointment

Elon Musk and Tesla executives discussed self-driving software and the Optimus robot during a conference call on Wednesday. The call came after the company reported its first-ever annual decline in vehicle deliveries, with revenue and adjusted profits falling short of estimates.

Musk said Tesla plans to launch unsupervised self-driving software as a paid service in select markets starting in June. The company has been testing autonomous vehicles at its Fremont, California, factory, and plans to expand the test to its Austin, Texas, factory soon.

Once approved, Musk expects the unsupervised system to be used for the “Cybercab” autonomous taxis, with potential rentals for Tesla owners to use their vehicles autonomously next year. The company’s Optimus humanoid robot is also expected to play a significant role in future revenue, with estimates suggesting trillions of dollars in revenue opportunities.

Analysts have mixed views on Tesla’s stock, with some citing concerns about the company’s financial performance and others praising its potential for growth. Despite the decline in vehicle deliveries, Tesla expects deliveries to return to growth in 2025.
