Elon Musk’s companies, X Corp and xAI, have filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI alleging antitrust violations and stifling competition in the AI industry. The lawsuit claims that Apple’s partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones is a monopoly that prevents rival chatbots from competing.
Musk’s xAI accuses OpenAI of maintaining illegal monopolies via ChatGPT and the iPhone’s App Store, citing “no reason” for users to download third-party AI apps when they are forced to use ChatGPT as their default chatbot app. The companies allege that Apple’s App Store rankings favor OpenAI, making it impossible for other AI companies to reach #1.
The lawsuit also accuses Apple of creating a “moat” around OpenAI by leveraging its monopoly on smartphones and access to hundreds of millions of user prompts from iPhones. This allegedly gives OpenAI an unfair advantage in the market.
OpenAI has responded to Musk’s claims, stating that his actions are part of a pattern of harassment. Apple has defended its App Store as “designed to be fair and free of bias.”
