Elon Musk Sues Companies for Illegally Boycotting Social Media Platform

Elon Musk’s X has filed an amended lawsuit against more companies, accusing them of joining a group that illegally boycotted the platform. The Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) and its member companies are being sued over allegedly conspiring to withhold billions in advertising revenue. This adds new companies such as Lego, Shell, Nestle, Abbott Laboratories, Colgate-Palmolive, Pinterest, and Tyson Foods to the list of defendants.

The lawsuit claims that GARM member companies acted together to enforce brand safety standards on X, which they favored over others. The companies allegedly celebrated when X failed to meet revenue goals and are still affected today despite applying higher standards than those specified by GARM.

Musk’s lawyers argue that social media platforms should be allowed to set their own brand safety standards in a competitive market, as this would inform advertisers’ individual decisions about where to advertise. However, they claim that collective action among competing advertisers undermines consumers’ interests and shortcuts the competitive process.
