Elon Musk to Leave DOGE Role in May

White House confirms Elon Musk will exit his role as a special government employee with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) later this spring, once his 130-day term is complete. The news comes after President Trump and Musk previously stated that Musk would depart from public service when his work at DOGE was finished.

In response to a Politico article suggesting Musk would step back from his role, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the report “fake news.” However, the 130-day timeframe for Musk’s special government employee position is set to expire on May 30.

DOGE is a temporary cross-departmental organization established by President Trump to streamline and reduce the federal government. The group will be dissolved on July 4, 2026. Musk has been serving as the public face of DOGE since its inception in January.

The White House and Trump have consistently stated that Musk’s role was temporary, with Trump saying he would “keep him as long as I can keep him.” However, the 130-day term limit will ultimately determine Musk’s departure from DOGE.
