Elon Musk’s Email Demand for Federal Employees Ends

The US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced that federal employees will no longer have to respond to weekly emails sent by Elon Musk, who had demanded they list their accomplishments in order to avoid termination.

As part of a broader effort to improve performance management, OPM plans to support agencies as they transition to regular check-ins with employees. This move comes after widespread confusion and criticism from federal workers regarding the initial email request. The emails, which asked employees to explain what work they did during the week in bullet points, were deemed unnecessary and unproductive.

In February, Musk had posted on X that all federal employees would soon receive an email asking them to describe their accomplishments, stating that failure to respond would be taken as a resignation. However, OPM later clarified that responding was voluntary and not mandatory.

This change marks the end of Elon Musk’s involvement in directing federal employees on how to perform their jobs. The move follows a period of tension between Musk and President Trump, who had appointed him as a special government employee to lead the Department of Government Efficiency.
