Elon Musk’s Far-Right Alliance Sparks Alarm Across Europe

Elon Musk is expanding his influence across the continent, backing far-right parties and politicians that have sparked alarm among European leaders. The Tesla CEO has endorsed Alternative for Germany, a party under observation by the domestic intelligence agency for suspected extremism, and demanded the release of jailed UK anti-Islam extremist Tommy Robinson.

Musk’s endorsement of far-right candidates has raised concerns about his intentions in Europe. Professor Andrew Chadwick at Loughborough University warned that Musk is using social media to promote an international movement of the far right, often with large followings.

The European Union has launched infringement proceedings against X, where Musk is active, over issues like hate speech and disinformation. French President Emmanuel Macron criticized Musk’s actions, saying they pose risks to democratic institutions. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called Musk’s involvement in politics “worrying” but said Germany’s way forward will be decided by voters.

Musk has also sparked controversy by labeling British politicians as “stupid cretin” and accusing them of failing to address child abuse cases. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned these comments, calling for robust debate based on facts and truth. The EU is under pressure to regulate social media companies like X, but Musk remains critical of efforts to curb online misinformation.

As Tesla struggles in Europe, Musk’s outspoken politics may harm the company’s image among potential buyers who disagree with his views. However, some see benefits in his support for far-right politicians, citing past successes in the US.
