Billionaire investor Kevin O’Leary has shared his take on Elon Musk’s relentless focus, comparing it to Steve Jobs. Both Musk and Jobs operate on a “different wavelength,” prioritizing efficiency and cutting out distractions. According to O’Leary, anyone who wastes time on non-essential activities will lose.
O’Leary recalled working with Jobs at Apple, where he witnessed Jobs’ brutal focus firsthand. During a meeting, a product manager suggested spending $2 million on market research, only to be shut down by Jobs. Jobs replied, “We don’t do market research at Apple,” and then fired back when the woman expressed her feelings: “Are you making a boatload of money? Are we growing share faster than anybody else? Shut up and go to work.”
O’Leary dubbed Jobs as having 85% signal (productive effort) and 15% noise (distractions). The results spoke for themselves, with Apple’s unmatched success. Now, O’Leary applies the same philosophy to Musk, who he claims has “100% signal” – eliminating distractions entirely.
