Elon Musk’s government service as a special employee is set to end soon, according to administration insiders. The billionaire will step down from his lead role in the weeks to come, contradicting earlier claims that he would be “here to stay.”
Musk joined Trump’s team in January and has been operating a “department of government efficiency” (Doge) since then. Doge has made significant changes to federal agencies, including triggering large-scale layoffs and eliminating entire agencies such as USAID. The department has saved an estimated $140 billion so far.
However, Musk’s involvement has raised concerns about conflict-of-interest and his personal likeability. A recent poll found that only 41% of the US public approve of Doge’s work, while Musk’s personal likeability is even lower at 38%.
Despite this, Trump has expressed support for Musk and plans to continue Doge until 2026 under his executive order. Musk expects to accomplish most of his savings targets before leaving, but some have questioned the accuracy of these claims.
The White House has denied reports that Musk will step down soon, calling them “fake news.” However, Politico’s story on Wednesday revealed that administration insiders confirm Musk’s departure is imminent.
