German politicians are expressing outrage over recent comments made by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has been endorsing far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) ahead of February’s election. Musk’s social media posts have been described as “undignified” and “offensive,” with some leaders calling them a crossing of the line between friendly states.
In one post, Musk called Chancellor Olaf Scholz “a fool,” which he later published in a German daily supporting the AfD. This has sparked accusations that Musk is trying to sway the election. A spokesperson for the German government has stated that Musk’s opinions are evidence that he seeks to interfere in the campaign.
German defamation laws protect freedom of expression and press freedom, but also prohibit insults and slander. Insults can result in fines or up to two years’ imprisonment, although harsh punishments are rare. However, no legal action is being taken against Musk due to a lack of interest from politicians who have been insulted on social media.
The far-right AfD is currently polling second with 20% support, and Musk’s endorsement has contributed significantly to their campaign. Musk is expected to meet with the party’s leader Alice Weidel soon, fueling speculation about his growing involvement in German politics.
