The FBI has launched a new task force to investigate attacks targeting Tesla, an electric vehicle company led by CEO Elon Musk. The move comes after multiple incidents of vandalism and arson at Tesla showrooms in the US and Canada. At least 80 cases have been reported, with peaceful protests also taking place outside some locations.
The FBI said it is working closely with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to crack down on the violence. “This is domestic terrorism,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “Those responsible will be pursued, caught, and brought to justice.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been a target for criticism from some groups, including those who accuse him of using his wealth to influence politics. A group called “Tesla Takedown” claims it is protesting what it sees as Musk’s attempts to undermine democracy.
However, the group says its protests will be non-violent. The FBI task force aims to ensure public safety and protect Tesla’s facilities from further attacks. Tesla shares have taken a hit in recent weeks, with the stock closing at $278.39 per share on Monday, down 40% from its 52-week high.
