Sir Elton John has opened up about making his new album “Who Believes in Angels?” during a panel discussion at the 92nd Street Y in New York. The five-time Grammy winner, 78, appeared alongside Brandi Carlile and songwriter Bernie Taupin for the premiere of the short film documenting their creative process.
John admitted he was not in good shape while making the record, citing exhaustion and self-doubt that led to aggression and bad behavior. Despite these challenges, John is happy with the final product, which thematically explores the idea of the afterlife.
The album features Carlile’s Americana songwriting style and includes tracks like “Little Richard’s Bible” and “Swing for the Fences.” John credited his collaborators, including Carlile, Taupin, and producer Andrew Watt, with helping him overcome his doubts and bring the energy needed to complete the record.
John also spoke about the emotional depth of his music, stating that it comes from a place of honesty and vulnerability. He expressed gratitude towards his collaborators for standing by him during a challenging process.
The album will be released on Friday, accompanied by a short film premiere on YouTube at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 5.
