“Embracing Quirkiness at the Oregon Country Fair”

As I stepped into the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, I knew I was in for an adventure. The fair’s countercultural vibe and sprawling woodland setting drew tens of thousands of people each year. After attending my first fair as a reporter, I returned this summer to experience it as a visitor. While insider tips like staying hydrated and trying the food were helpful, I encountered some unexpected surprises.

My journey began on a free bus ride from downtown Eugene, which proved to be a great way to beat the heat. However, navigating the grounds without an inside track was challenging, especially during peak hours. The large lunchtime lines for food limited my options, and waiting in long ATM lines took away from the overall experience.

To cope with the heat, I found refuge in shady areas like the Xavanadu meadow or frequent water stations. Vegan ice cream vendor Coconut Bliss provided a sweet treat, while fountains helped keep me hydrated. However, some attractions, like the communal showers, were out of my comfort zone.

One of the highlights of my visit was live music at the Main Stage. The Rainbow Girls’ performance was captivating, with energetic rhythms and poignant messages. Their set even drew applause from solo attendees, who felt a sense of community.

In between songs, the lead singer asked if anyone was there alone or with friends, highlighting the importance of human connection in such events. I was touched by an unexpected hug from another fair attendee, which reminded me that this scene may not be for everyone, but it’s worth experiencing – at least once.
