Emilia Pérez Dropping from Oscar Campaign Amid Controversy

Emilia Pérez, the best actress Oscar nominee, was expected to attend several high-profile awards ceremonies in Los Angeles this week but will not be coming after a massive controversy surrounding her recent comments on social media.

Pérez’s co-star Karla Sofía Gascón is facing backlash for posting tweets about the film she stars in without consulting Netflix, which owns Emilia Pérez’s distribution rights. The two parties are now communicating only through Gascón’s agent, and Netflix has decided not to provide usual courtesies such as transportation and accommodations to facilitate her attendance at remaining awards season gatherings.

As a result, Pérez will miss the AFI Awards luncheon, Critics Choice Awards, and Producers Guild Awards. However, she may still attend other events closer to home, such as Spain’s version of the Oscars, where some of her behavior is not seen to be as problematic.

Netflix is now focusing on keeping Emilia Pérez’s other nominees clear from the controversy, particularly Saldaña, who was the clear frontrunner in the best supporting actress category. Some billboards featuring Gascón will soon highlight other castmembers instead.

Pérez and her collaborators may still win top prizes at the Critics Choice Awards and PGA Awards, but it remains to be seen how they will address Gascón’s absence from the ceremony.
