The Oscars campaign for the film “Emilia Pérez” is facing backlash amid controversy surrounding actress Karla Sofía Gascón’s resurfaced social media posts. The French-produced musical, about a Mexican cartel boss who transitions into a woman, won the jury prize at Cannes and received 13 Oscar nominations.
Gascón has been accused of making offensive comments about George Floyd, Islam, and the 2021 Oscar ceremony, which she claims were taken out of context. Netflix has since distanced itself from her and pulled her from upcoming events.
Director Jacques Audiard has also faced criticism for his handling of the film’s subject matter, including his claim that he didn’t do substantial research on Mexico’s drug war. The film has been accused of trivializing violence and using stereotypical language.
Some Mexican viewers have taken issue with the lack of talent behind the camera, citing that only one Mexican actor, Adriana Paz, is involved in the principal cast. A parody short film, “Johanne Sacreblu,” has gained popularity among trans activists and critics who argue that “Emilia Pérez” perpetuates tired trans tropes.
As the Oscars voting period approaches, it remains to be seen how the controversy will affect the film’s chances of winning awards, particularly in categories such as best international film and best supporting actress.
