Emilia Pérez Wins 2 Oscars Amid Controversy Over Karla Sofía Gascón’s Tweets

Emilia Pérez led the nominations into the 97th Academy Awards with her musical crime drama, but left the ceremony without many wins. Pérez won only two Oscars, a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Zoe Saldaña and an Oscar for Best Original Song for “El Mal”. The awards came despite a major backlash against Gascón’s offensive tweets from 2020 and 2021.

Despite this controversy, Saldaña’s victory in the Best Supporting Actress category was largely unaffected. She had previously won several other major awards for her role, including those from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards.

Saldaña gave a tearful acceptance speech, praising her roots and late grandmother. “I am proud to be the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award,” she said.

Oscars host Conan O’Brien poked fun at Gascón’s controversy during his opening monologue, joking that her tweets were more profane than Anora’s. He also took a jab at Gascón herself, saying “remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel!” after she tweeted about the Oscars.

The big winner of the 2025 Oscars was Anora, which won several categories including Best Picture and Best Actress for Mikey Madison. Adrien Brody took home the Best Actor Oscar for The Brutalist, while Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain.
