Emma Thompson recently received the Leopard Club Award at the Locarno Film Festival, where she discussed her career, including getting a call from Donald Trump asking her on a date. The actress recalled the awkward moment, saying she thought it was a joke and politely declined.
Thompson also talked about her days doing stand-up comedy, including jokes about herpes and Margaret Thatcher. She said one of her comedy sketches was about a Victorian woman who comes home to see her mother, only to discover her husband has a small creature attached to his body – a joke that eventually led to her being cast in the film “Sense and Sensibility”.
Thompson also expressed her gratitude for her work on the Harry Potter films, although she joked about not wanting to be rude to fans who enjoy the series. She discussed her new film, action-thriller “Dead of Winter”, which premiered at the festival.
The actress, who has won awards for both acting and screenwriting, talked about taking risks in her roles and remaining a vital force in the film industry for four decades. Thompson also shared some thoughts on her experience playing a widowed fisherwoman in “Dead of Winter”, which she called being heroic but also scary – physically.
Thompson’s speech at the festival was met with laughter and applause, with her daughter Gaia also sharing some insights into the actress’s new film. The Locarno Film Festival runs through August 16.
