Emmy-winning actress Loretta Swit died on Friday, May 30, at the age of 87 due to natural causes. Her publicist Harlan Boll confirmed the news.
Swit was best known for her role as Major Margaret J “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the CBS series M*A*S*H from 1972 to 1983, earning her two Primetime Emmy Awards and numerous Golden Globe nominations. The actress had a long and varied career, appearing in various TV shows and films, including Hawaii Five-O, Gunsmoke, and Batman: The Animated Series.
Swit also made her Broadway debut in 1975’s Same Time, Next Year and received the Sarah Siddons Award in 1991. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989. Outside of acting, Swit was an animal rights activist and released a book, Switheart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit, in 2017.
The actress married actor Dennis Holahan in 1983 and divorced in 1995, never having children. She appeared in her final acting role in 2019 in the movie Play the Flute.
