Empty Airports in Las Vegas Spark Concerns About Declining Tourism

A recent video shared on social media shows eerily empty hallways at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, sparking concerns about declining tourism in the city. The video, posted by tourist Jake Broe, captures an almost deserted airport with no lines or passengers, unlike the usual bustling energy of the city.

According to LVCVA reports, hotel occupancy in Las Vegas has dropped 6.5% and average daily room rates have decreased from $194 to $163. Meanwhile, Harry Reid Airport has seen a 41% year-over-year decline in traffic. These numbers come as no surprise, given US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and travel bans, which have led to a significant drop in international tourists.

Industry experts attribute the decline to a combination of factors, including harsh immigration policies, high visa fees, and an overall negative perception of the US among international travelers. The hospitality industry remains optimistic about a bounce-back, but for now, the trend suggests that Las Vegas is struggling to attract visitors.

US tourism has lost $29 billion in revenue due to Trump’s tariff frenzy, according to Forbes. Canadians were previously the highest-paying tourists in the US, making up one-fourth of all foreign travelers in 2024, but a significant decline was observed later that year. The situation highlights the challenges faced by the US in attracting international visitors and the need for a more welcoming environment for tourists.
