An Endeavor Air CRJ-900 aircraft crashed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on February 17, resulting in damage but no fatalities. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has issued a preliminary report that suggests excessive pilot actions may have contributed to the crash.
According to investigators, the aircraft descended too quickly, striking the runway and causing the right main landing gear to collapse. This led to the detachment of the right wing from the fuselage, sparking a fire. However, despite these serious injuries, there were no fatalities.
Enhanced ground proximity warning system alerts had been triggered just 2.6 seconds before landing, indicating an excessive descent rate of around 1,098 feet per minute. The incident occurred with a bank angle of about 7 degrees to the right.
Despite initial concerns, investigators found no evidence of preexisting issues with the flight controls. However, the pilot flying at the time had recently joined Endeavor Air and was logging fewer hours on the specific aircraft type compared to the captain.
In a statement, TSB Chair Yoan Marier emphasized that accidents are often caused by multiple factors beyond just the aircraft or crew. A final report is expected within up to 12 months.
