Epic Games is making significant changes to its store to provide an attractive alternative to Apple’s in-app purchases. The moves come just a day after a court ruling that prohibits Apple from collecting fees on purchases outside of apps and restricts how they point to off-platform payments.
To attract developers, Epic is introducing a revenue-sharing model that allows them to keep all their earnings under $1 million for payments processed via the Epic Games Store. This means developers will receive 100% of their revenue on their first $1 million in sales per year, with an 88/12 percent revenue share for sales above that threshold.
The change is set to take effect in June and also includes a new feature allowing developers to launch “webshops” – online stores hosted by Epic Games Store that can offer players out-of-app purchases at lower costs. To incentivize spending through these webshops, Epic will award 5% Epic Rewards on all purchases made.
The updates aim to give developers more control over their sales and provide a cost-effective alternative to Apple’s in-app purchase model, which charges higher fees for certain transactions.
