President Donald Trump has demanded an apology from Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde after she appealed to him during a prayer service marking his inauguration to have mercy on the LGBTQ+ community and migrant workers in the United States. The bishop, who is critical of Trump’s policies, asked for God’s mercy on those who fear persecution or deportation.
Trump responded harshly, calling Budde a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater” and criticizing her sermon as ungracious and not compelling. He also claimed that she didn’t mention the harm caused by some migrants who have come to the US and killed people. The bishop had criticized Trump for his “racialized rhetoric” and blamed him for inciting violence on January 6, 2021.
The Washington National Cathedral service, which was attended by Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and other high-ranking officials, focused on national unity rather than partisan politics. However, conservative evangelicals were largely absent from the ceremony.
Trump’s comments have been met with criticism from some who say they reflect poorly on him and his administration. The bishop’s sermon, while provocative, was seen by many as a call for compassion and understanding.
