Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of being the “biggest obstacle” to regional peace. Addressing Arab League diplomats during a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, Erdoğan urged countries with influence over Israel not to support its actions and to seek solutions through dialogue.
Erdoğan blamed Western leaders for providing “unconditional support” to Israel, saying his country would not allow borders in the Middle East to be redrawn “in blood”. He criticized Netanyahu’s Zionist ambitions, calling them a threat to regional stability. Erdoğan also accused Israeli attacks on Iran of being an attempt to sabotage nuclear talks with the US.
Turkey has strong bilateral relations with Iran and is well-placed to help find a resolution to the conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said his country will only engage in diplomacy if Israel stops its attacks on Iran. The OIC meeting comes as tensions between Israel and Iran continue, with Netanyahu’s government seen as a major obstacle to peace talks.
