Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated his support for a two-state solution on the island of Cyprus, 51 years after the Turkish invasion that divided the island. Speaking at a public works inauguration ceremony, Erdogan emphasized the importance of brotherhood, security, and peace for Turkish Cypriots and stated Turkey’s enduring presence in Cyprus.
Erdogan expressed solidarity with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and called for the international community to accept the reality on the ground – two separate states. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) declared independence in 1983, recognized only by Turkey. Erdogan advocated for diplomatic and economic ties with TRNC, labeling its non-recognition as unfair.
Erdogan also honored the lives lost during the 1974 invasion, commemorating the anniversary on social media. He congratulated Turkish Cypriots on Peace and Freedom Day, expressing gratitude to heroic veterans who fought for their people’s existence.
