Eric Dane Openly Discloses ALS Diagnosis and Resilience

Former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Eric Dane has revealed that he is in a research study to try to slow the effects of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The 52-year-old actor told ABC News’ Diane Sawyer that he has lost use of his right arm and is taking medication in an effort to stave off paralysis.

Dane, who previously revealed his diagnosis in April, said he finds hope in his doctor, Dr. Merit Cudkowicz, a leading ALS researcher. She has stated that there is currently no known cure for the disease but some treatments may slow down its progression and improve quality of life.

The average prognosis for ALS patients is two to five years of survival from first symptoms, with 10% living 10 years or more. Dane says he is willing to try anything to delay the onset of paralysis, including unconventional methods.

Despite the uncertainty, Dane remains optimistic, saying he is “resilient” and “very hopeful” about his chances of beating the disease. He credits Dr. Cudkowicz with instilling hope in him, unlike other doctors who had previously told him there was little to be done.

As researchers continue to work on a cure for ALS, Dane’s story highlights the ongoing efforts to improve treatment options and patient outcomes. With advancements in medical technology and research, Dane believes that one day he will find a way to overcome his diagnosis and live a long life.
