NFL running back Saquon Barkley is closing in on Eric Dickerson’s 40-year-old single-season record of 2,105 yards. While many consider records meant to be broken, Dickerson remains possessive about his mark.
Barkley has 2,005 yards on 345 carries this season and can reach the milestone next week against the New York Giants, where he played for six seasons before becoming a free agent last offseason. Despite his own record being at stake, Dickerson acknowledges that breaking it won’t diminish Barkley’s achievement. He attributes Barkley’s success to having a strong quarterback in Jalen Hurts and a solid offensive line.
However, Dickerson is adamant about preserving his legacy and doesn’t see any need for an asterisk. The 64-year-old former player knows the challenges of achieving such a feat, particularly with the NFL season now stretching to 17 games. He recalls breaking O.J. Simpson’s record in the 15th game during the 1983 season and believes Barkley can do the same.
While Dickerson might not see his mark being broken anytime soon, he is excited for his 12-year-old son Dallis, who dreams of following in his footsteps and potentially breaking the record one day.
