Errol Morris’ new documentary “Chaos: The Manson Murders” presents alternative theories surrounding Charles Manson’s infamous killing spree in the 1960s. Based on Tom O’Neill’s book, the film explores how Manson may have had links to government programs related to mind control and brainwashing.
According to O’Neill, Manson possibly had connections to secret government research into mind control and brainwashing, such as the CIA’s project MKUltra. During this time, Manson and his followers frequented a clinic where patients were reportedly used as research subjects for these studies. O’Neill suggests that Manson’s ties to these programs could explain why his parole officer was lenient on him despite breaking rules.
The documentary also raises questions about the motivation behind Manson’s actions. One theory is that he was motivated by paranoia, urging his followers to commit severe crimes to keep them in line. Another theory suggests that Manson may have been part of a government counterintelligence program intent on discrediting left-wing movements like the Black Panthers.
Morris’ film challenges the “Helter Skelter” theory presented at the Tate-LaBianca trial and presents alternative takes through interviews with O’Neill, former Manson associate Bobby Beausoleil, and archival footage. The documentary is now available on Netflix.
