A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology has found that erythritol, a popular sugar substitute, can increase the risk of stroke in people with diabetes and those following a keto diet. Researchers at the University of Colorado exposed brain vessel cells to erythritol at a concentration equivalent to one sweetened beverage, resulting in increased oxidative stress, decreased nitric oxide production, and disrupted clot dissolution mechanisms.
The combination of these changes creates an environment conducive to stroke development, warns Auburn Berry, lead researcher on the team. Erythritol is commonly found in products designed for people with diabetes and keto dieters, including chewing gum, soft drinks, and sugar-free desserts.
However, more research is needed to fully understand the risks associated with erythritol consumption. The study was conducted exclusively on cell cultures, and further investigation is required to determine the effects of varying doses, long-term consequences, and identify potential high-risk groups.
