ESA Unveils Mysterious Mars Image with Ancient Features

The European Space Agency (ESA) has shared an intriguing image of Mars’ Acheron Fossae region, showcasing various geological features that hint at the planet’s past activity. The image was captured by ESA’s Mars Express on October 28, 2024, and features a mixture of trough-like ditches, steep cliffs, smooth plains, and tall domes formed by volcanism.

The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) of Mars Express gathered this data, providing detailed insights into the region. The image highlights six key features with numerical labels, allowing users to explore the landscape in more depth.

This Martian patch appears broadly tan in colour, featuring a system of deep grooves radiating from the right half of the image and several scattered circular impact craters. The ground resolution is approximately 17 meters per pixel.

The ESA mission aims to shape Europe’s space capability and deliver benefits to its citizens. With ongoing missions like Jupiter, the agency continues to explore our Solar System and unlock its secrets.
