A mass evacuation has begun in northeastern Ethiopia after a volcano showed signs of potentially dangerous activity. The Afar region’s residents have been relocated to temporary shelters as authorities exercise caution.
According to officials, it is premature to describe the activity as an eruption, but they are taking precautions. The Ethiopian Geological Institute shared a video showing dust and smoke rising from Mount Dofen, a long-dormant volcano.
The area has seen increased seismic activity in recent months, with dozens of earthquakes and tremors recorded. A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck on Saturday at a depth of about 10 kilometers, while another magnitude 5.5 quake hit on Friday.
Residents are being relocated to temporary shelters as authorities predict further volcanic activity. The evacuation is part of the country’s disaster risk management efforts to ensure public safety.
