EU Allocates €500,000 Aid for Benue State Crisis

The European Union (EU) has pledged €500,000 (approximately ₦886 million) to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to thousands of internally displaced persons in Benue State, Nigeria. The funding is part of a six-month response to address the critical humanitarian crisis caused by deadly attacks.

According to the EU, more than 1.5 million people have been displaced from their homes since 2018, with over 6,900 lives lost and over 400,000 people displaced between 2024 and 2025. The recent surge in violence has further worsened the situation, forcing nearly 23,000 people to flee in June 2025.

The EU’s aid package will focus on providing critical interventions, including protection, shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), as well as multi-purpose cash assistance for affected populations. The funding aims to address dire conditions inside camps, where there is a severe lack of shelter and inadequate access to basic necessities like water and sanitation.

The EU’s Public Affairs Officer stated that the situation in Benue State is “critical” and “complex,” with vulnerable groups such as women, children, and people with disabilities facing increased protection risks. The funding will support efforts by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to implement these activities over the six-month period.
